Projects

All project work undertaken by Envirowork Lewisham is designed to enhance and improve the local environment, whether it be public open spaces such as parks and nature reserves, school gardens and play areas, housing estate surrounds or private gardens. All work is undertaken by groups of Trainees under the eye of trained supervisors specialising in a variety of skills. A typical day rate for a group of five Trainees plus supervisor plus transport and insurance is £350, while residential garden work is charged at £100 a day.

Restoration & Regeneration

Working in partnership with Lewisham’s Greenscene division, Envirowork has, over the last year, undertaken building and site restoration in a couple of parks, which has allowed Trainees to develop additional construction skills.
It is anticipated that more projects of this nature will be developed with the council and other local organisations such as the Lewisham Environment Trust to restore and regenerate local buildings and open spaces that have fallen into a state of disrepair and neglect.

Housing Estates

Envirowork Lewisham works with Housing Associations on estates projects and grounds maintenance.
Our NDC contract includes estate garden clearances. Some gardens have been unmanaged for years and become overgrown with local rubbish strewn amongst the vegetation with evidence of other antisocial behaviour. The changes make a real quality of life difference to locals and opens up opportunities for community activity and cohesion.

Parks and Open Spaces

During its first year of operation from the old park keeper’s depot in Hilly Fields Park, working in partnership with Glendale, Envirowork has taken on the management of the shaded garden in Hilly Fields and the boundaries of the Bowling Green, which has been well received by park users.
Envirowork has also worked in partnership with the council on the new Cornmill Gardens and it is anticipated that it will be involved in the Quercus project in Ladywell Fields and the regeneration of Mountsfield Park, providing valuable training and work experience for Trainees.

Nature Reserves

Envirowork works closely with Greenscene’s Ecological Regeneration Manager and Allotments Officer in assisting in the maintenance of a number of the borough’s 23 nature reserves and the clearance and restoration of derelict allotment plots. It is hoped to raise funding in the future for a programme of enhancement of all the reserves, which will include specific conservation management training for trainees.

Envirowork offers regular planned monthly maintenance for local schools and has worked regularly with four schools on this basis in its first year. It has also worked for a number of schools on specific projects, including the regeneration of decaying ponds, the creation of woodland gardens, flower gardens, vegetable plots, the installation of rustic compost bins and tree maintenance work. All supervisors are CRB checked and all Trainees are strictly supervised while in school grounds.

NDC - New Cross Gate

In November 2005, Envirowork was awarded an 18-month contract to provide an environmental clean-up in New Cross Gate as part of the regeneration of the area by New Deal for Communities.
Work has included clearing a number of overgrown and derelict areas which were unsafe and threatening and creating open space areas that are safe for public use and pleasing to the eye.
Recently two tonnes of bulbs have been planted along main road verges to bring colour into the area in the spring. The local community gardens in Besson Street have been maintained on a weekly basis and Envirowork continues to work closely with local residents to provide improvements to their environment.

Garden Clearance and Maintenance

In response to demand, a specialist gardening team and gardening rate has been set up, providing private garden clearance and maintenance work, include pruning and felling of trees.
In addition to this service and as part of its remit as a community organisation, Envirowork, in partnership with the Lewisham Handy Person Service, provides garden clearance and maintenance for elderly, vulnerable and disabled people in the borough. Labour is free of charge and materials are charged at cost. This work is normally done on Wednesdays which is our ‘community day’.

Trees

Envirowork Lewisham is a recognised arboricultural contractor to Lewisham Council working in estates, streets and cemeteries. Our experienced and qualified arboricultural crew can take on jobs from epicormic growth removal, small crown lifts and reductions to felling whole large trees by roads. Logs have been distributed to schools and private people for use in gardens landscaping projects. Chippings can be offered back as mulch. Our team also plants trees as part of landscaping projects in gardens, hospital grounds and parks. If a sensible TGO shows promise he or she is taken on as an apprentice and sent on further training.
